Title: EU Expert Group on Further Action on international climate protection efforts following the Kyoto protocol
Coordinating Institutions: EU presidency
Objective: EU internal expert group to identify approaches which facilitate
a) re-integration of the U.S and other other Annex I countries, which have not yet ratified the Kyoto Protocol, and
b) the promotion of the participation of developing countries
Project Description: EGFA compiles and analyses the already conducted relevant research for the further development of the commitments under UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol. The group shall prepare the EU strategy for negotiations on the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol and provide the scientific and strategic basis for the EU position. Currently, the work focuses on the establishment of intensive dialogues with other industrialized countries and with developing countries in order to identify possible starting points for future negotiations. In May 2003 an EGFA workshop on the integration of developing countries took place which dealt with the following topics: burden-sharing approaches and their cost for specific countries/regions; latest developments in research on regional climatic effects and the vulnerability of regions; interlinkages between development aid, development priorities of countries and the requirements for climate protection.
